95% vote in favour of pay offer.
I am pleased to report that ASLEF members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the London Underground pay offer.
This guarantees our members a pay rise linked to the retail price index [RPI] inflation rate for this year and the next two years. This is an important achievement at a time when there will be huge pressure on public expenditure and pay rises across the public sector.
We have asked London Underground to confirm payment dates as soon as possible so members know when you will receive your back pay.
4-day week.
Now that the pay round has been concluded, we will focus on delivering the four-day week rosters that our members have been waiting for. The Bakerloo line will be the first to benefit with a four-day week introduced this spring. We then want this rolled out as soon as possible so that Underground drivers can enjoy the same quality time away from work as virtually every other train driver in the country.
As a reminder of the key points of the 4-day week agreement.
There is no reduction in pay, annual leave entitlement, or pension.
Your annual leave entitlement does not change. It remains at 7.4 weeks. A week’s leave will only use up 4 days of your entitlement.
Instead of “banking up” an hour per week on top of your contractual week of 35 hours, rosters will be based on 34 hours per week, with the additional 5.2 days per year used for non-driving days, including training and personal development.
That means that the average working week reduces from 38.5 hours now to 34 hours per week, a reduction of 4.5 hours. The longest possible working week reduces from 42.5 hours now to 38 hours per week, an average 4.5 hours fewer at work each week.
Your salary, pension and all other benefits will remain unchanged. Duty changeovers, Syndicates and fixed link rosters will all remain in place. 3 rest days per week will give syndicates more options to group runs of rest days meaning more quality time off.
For the first time, pool drivers will have a rest day that is rostered in advance giving them more ability to plan ahead then they do now as well as an extra day off every week.
Changes to the framework and other agreements are being negotiated and agreed at Trains Council including a voluntary overtime and rest day working agreement. Agreements will be similar to those on mainline TOC’s that already work a 4-day week.
Management have agreed that on a voluntary basis drivers will be able to opt to continue working a 5-day week. Instead of uselessly trying to obstruct this huge step forward we want the RMT to join with us in negotiating the best possible outcome for every Underground driver.
Your ASLEF Trains Council reps will continue to update members on progress.
New General Secretary elect.
Dave Calfe, the President of the Executive Committee has been elected as the next General Secretary of ASLEF. Dave is a hugely experienced leader of our union whose strength and determination will be a huge asset to our members. We were fortunate to have two excellent candidates in Dave and AGS Simon Weller who will now go forward in unity representing our members.
